We are seeking a high-performing Business Development Manager to originate business with U.S. natural gas Independent Power Producers (IPPs), and novel power generation, specifically owners/operators and sponsors of firm generation portfolios. This is a pure “hunter” role: the successful candidate will open doors where the client has limited or no historical penetration, convert executive conversations into opportunities, and sell M&A-focused technical due diligence into an active transaction market.
The initial commercial entry is M&A technical services (e.g., technical diligence, red-flag assessments, and transaction support) for IPPs developing, buying, selling, or recapitalizing firm power generation portfolios. Over time, the role will expand relationships into broader lifecycle advisory services, such as owner’s engineering, but the near-term mandate is the origination of IPPs and novel power generation infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Originate new natural IPP customers and establish executive-level relationships across the firm power IPP ecosystem.
- Build and execute a go-to-market plan focused on M&A-driven engagement, including targeting, outreach strategy, account prioritization, and pipeline creation.
- Sell technical due diligence / transaction advisory services aligned to acquisitions, divestitures, financings, and portfolio optimization initiatives.
- Engage senior stakeholders such as CEOs, CIOs, Heads of M&A / Corporate Development, Portfolio/Asset Management leaders, and Development executives.
- Partner with internal technical and delivery teams to scope opportunities, shape proposals, and ensure high-quality execution and repeatable account growth.
- Maintain disciplined commercial management: CRM hygiene, pipeline forecasting, pursuit strategy, and internal coordination across a matrix organization.
- Track market activity (assets changing hands, sponsor activity, new entrants, platform buildouts) to anticipate where diligence needs will emerge next.
Requirements
- Ideal candidate is a business development / origination position selling professional services into energy and infrastructure customers. Prior experience selling or delivering services such as technical due diligence, lender’s engineer support, owner’s engineering, asset integrity, or transaction advisory.
- Additionally, acceptable profiles include those with a proven success in an IPP’s project development, business development or strategic finance teams.
- Desire and/or demonstrated ability to win new customers, building relationships from conception through close.
- Credible understanding of IPP business models and how natural-gas generation portfolios evaluate opportunities and risk.
- Working knowledge of M&A transaction cycles, including the players involved (Corp Dev, sponsors, lenders, advisors) and the pace of diligence timelines.
- Strong executive presence, consultative selling capability, and the ability to translate technical value into business outcomes.
- Existing relationships within the thermal IPP ecosystem (even a small set of high-quality decision-maker connections is valuable).
- Willingness to travel ~50%.
