Sr. Director Development

Industry: Power Generation
Level of Experience: Position Filled
Location: Position Filled
Job Number: Position Filled

The Sr. Director of Development, will lead late-stage development and execution for a multi-gigawatt portfolio of utility-scale solar and battery energy storage projects across the Southeastern U.S.

The Sr. Director serves as the key connection between executive leadership and two regional development teams and is expected to operate as a hands-on player/coach, not a purely delegating manager.

Regional development teams assume responsibility once projects achieve substantial land control and initial diligence, driving them through late-stage development, financing, tax equity readiness, and handoff into construction.

  • Provide strategic and day-to-day leadership for utility-scale solar and storage projects in the Southeast, overseeing schedule, budget, risk, and overall execution outcomes.
  • Take ownership of projects once projects reach advanced greenfield maturity with substantial land control and diligence completed. Drive projects through late-stage development to NTP and financial close.
  • Structure and manage projects to meet de-risking, financing, and tax credit/tax equity requirements, including safe-harboring strategies where applicable.
  • Coordinate closely with pre-construction and construction teams, ensuring a disciplined handoff into construction while maintaining project accountability through financial close.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 8 developers across two regional teams, fostering a culture of accountability, high performance, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Act as a player/coach willing and able to dive into detailed project work while setting direction and priorities for the broader team.
  • Oversee and refine the use of third-party partners, including environmental, engineering, permitting, and local strategy/lobbying consultants.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local stakeholders, including landowners, permitting agencies, utilities, and community representatives, to support timely project advancement.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders in interconnection, finance, legal, tax, EPC, and construction to ensure alignment on project assumptions, risk mitigation, and commercial outcomes.
  • Provide transparent reporting to leadership on portfolio status, critical path items, risks, and mitigation strategies across the regional pipeline.

Requirements:

  • 10–15 years of experience in utility-scale renewable energy development (solar and/or storage). Proven experience in SERC and MISO South strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record taking projects from late-stage development through financing and construction and successfully delivering permitting and local engagement outcomes.
  • Strong understanding of tax equity, tax credit structures, and safe-harboring concepts as they relate to project development and timing.
  • Proven experience managing and developing high-performing development teams across multiple projects and geographies.
  • Hands-on orientation with a willingness to engage directly in project work while leading teams (“player/coach”).
  • Experience coordinating third-party consultants and advisors in environmental, engineering, permitting, and local/community strategy.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with commercial, technical, and financial stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and organizational skills.
